Crowns
If you were to ask any dentist what combination of materials would provide the most functional, beautiful and satisfying results, his reply would probably be porcelain fused to metal (gold or non-precious); metal for strength, porcelain for strength and beauty. The end result is known as a porcelain veneer crown.
A porcelain veneer crown comprises an esthetic jacket of porcelain over a metal thimble, which replaces the enamel of the tooth. the tooth is prepared so that when the completed restoration is cemented to place, it rests securely in position.
The porcelain veneer crown derives its functional beauty from its great strength and resistance to chewing stress. The metal thimble, the substructure of the porcelain veneer crown, provides strength and durability. Dental porcelain, which is fused (veneered) to the thimble, is an extremely hard, highly reflective, color-stable material, which provides beauty and strength equal to that of tooth structure.
Porcelain veneer crowns are used to restore teeth that have been disfigured by extensive decay, breakage, abrasion (wearing), imperfect development or discoloration. They are sometimes used to correct poor alignment of the teeth. The primary goal in dentistry is to restore teeth to normal form, esthetic beauty and proper function.
The following cases show the results of using porcelain veneer crowns.
